The Center for Entrepreneurship, established in 1986, is a co-curricular program of the EMU College of Business which strives to encourage innovative business creation and growth in southeast Michigan and a strong culture of entrepreneurial thinking in the EMU community.
The Center operates a variety of programs in several areas, including:
Economic development We are the host for the Michigan Small Business Development Center Region 9 program serving Oakland, Monroe and Wayne counties and are actively engaged in supporting the Washtenaw Smart Zone, Ann Arbor SPARK, the B-Side program and other business development activities designed to encourage business growth and economic development.
Student service learning We operate a Small Business Institute which matches small businesses and non-profit organizations with EMU faculty led student teams of advanced students that participate in projects as part of their course work.
Student club We support the EMU Chapter of the Collegiate Entrepreneurs Organization (CEO) which maintains an active program of events for the benefit of all EMU students as well as area community college and high school students interested in entrepreneurship. The Club’s mission culminates with the annual Sesi Midwestern Entrepreneurship Conference in February.
Business plan competition The Center For Entrepreneurship at Eastern Michigan University is proud to host the only Business Plan Competition that includes university, community college and K-12 students of the Midwest region, competing in separate categories for thousands in cash prizes. Participants are required to have a faculty advisor, which gives support to the entrepreneurship program efforts that are developing in Midwest schools.
Research and curriculum development We convene the Entrepreneurship Continuous Improvement Committee (ECIT) made up of COB faculty from all departments who help strengthen and expand the academic programs in line with the changing business environment.
The philosophy of the Center for Entrepreneurship holds that talented entrepreneurs can become more successful if they are equipped with the training and skills required to cope with rapid growth. The Center's programs allow entrepreneurs to share tools for success and to build new strategies for growing their own companies.
